Lawyers Urged to Apply for St. Joseph County Judgeship

Indiana Supreme Court Justice Frank Sullivan Jr. is urging St. Joseph County attorneys to give serious consideration to applying to be appointed Judge of the Superior Court when Judge William T. Means retires this fall.  "Being a judge is a challenging but enormously gratifying way for an attorney to use all of his or her legal skills in a way that improves both the quality of life in our community and the quality of justice in our state," Sullivan said.  "Many lawyers think about pursuing a judicial career; this is a perfect time to do so."

Attorneys interested in being appointed to fill the vacancy created by long-time Superior Court Judge William Means's retirement must apply to the St. Joseph Superior Court Judicial Nominating Commission. The Commission, a bi-partisan group of seven individuals, will interview the applicants and forward the names of the five applicants it considers best qualified to Governor Mitch Daniels who will make the final appointment.

The application deadline is Friday, August 29, 2008, at 5:00 p.m.  Applications may be obtained from St. Joseph Superior Court Clerk Rita Glenn and are also available on-line through the Indiana Supreme Court web-site. For further information, you may also contact Kathryn Dolan, Indiana Supreme Court PIO 317.234.4722.

Notes From Bar President Carl Greci

Thank you to all who were able to attend the New Lawyer cook-out and Silver Hawks game at the Cove. We were blessed with both beautiful weather and great company. We had approximately 90 people attend, including many of our families. Special thanks to Amy McGuire, Mitch Heppenheimer, and Mike Arnold for their effort with this fine event.

I also wish to thank Mike Arnold for his wonderful service the last several years as chair of our New Lawyers group. Mike has re-located to Fort Wayne to take an in-house position with Lincoln Financial and we wish him and his family well in their new endeavor. Mike's successor as chair of the new lawyers group is Victoria Wolf. Congratulations and thank you Victoria for agreeing to serve our newest members of the profession in this capacity.

Take care.

Official Note to Members

As has been previously reported in this Newsletter, due to a significant loss of funding that became effective in January, 2008, the Board of Governors has been working to reduce costs and, at the same time, minimize the impact on its operation of the law library, updates to library materials, and the level of programs and events hosted by the Association. However, without the availability of additional funding, the Board must make the difficult decision of whether any further cost reductions are possible, or whether annual dues must be increased. The last dues increase for the St. Joseph County Bar Association was in 1999. At the current level of $100 per year, our annual dues are among the lowest in the State (e.g. Evansville is $210/year; Fort Wayne $195/year; Indianapolis $175/year (average)).

Therefore, this serves as the Board of Governors' official notice to the membership that the Board will be considering a dues increase in accordance with Article V of the By-Laws of the St. Joseph County Bar Association. Among the other topics for the Board's consideration is whether to increase annual dues over a one or two year period of time.

As always your comments are welcome. Please feel free to contact any of the Board members.

2008 Annual Golf Outing and Dinner Report

The Bar Association Annual Golf Outing and Dinner was a tremendous success again this year.  A very special thanks goes to Amy McGuire, Mario Zappia, Spence Walton, and Mitch Heppenheimer for all of their hard work on this event.  Thank you also to LexisNexis and Balanced Legal Solutions, who provided some special prizes to this year’s golfers including a Callaway driver, and two $100 American Express gift certificates. As usual, Spence Walton did a fabulous job selecting a variety of golf and non-golf related prizes for everyone in attendance. No one is a loser at the Bar Association Golf Outing!!

If you didn’t attend this year — we missed you!  We hope to see more members next year for this terrific event. Don't worry about your golf skills! This is an event that focuses on fun, and we are always looking for solo golfers to fill in some of our foursome "gaps." So, please plan to join us next year for this great day outside of the office.
